What We Eat Matters

I have made a pledge... to NOT eat meat for day. I do not think it will be very difficult once I put my will into it. I've been having 2 meatless meals a day for about a year since my diagnosis of GIST in 2007. I hope that I will be successful in this endeavour.

My next aim is to go meatless for a week.

Do visit the Plate to Planet webpage to learn more about the environmental effects of our food choices and also do a pledge.

Kinokuniya Sale

Another Kinokuniya sale but it's only held at their Liang Court branch as it's their 11th Anniversary. The selection here is not as much as the Ngee Ann City store but they carry a good range of Japanese books and magazines. Their stationery section is also good.

Remember to head down to the store between 28 April and 1 May 2010.

Mentholatum Deep Moist Lipbalm

I'm loving my Mentholatum lip balm. This is one of the best drugstore lip balm that I've tried so far. My lips are super parched often cracks and bleed. After using this lip balm, I've noticed a marked improvement. On days that I don't have it with me, my lips would often suffer. I'll definitely repurchase this. Peeve

I never thought that I would have a pet peeve till recently I've been visiting public toilets ever so often due to my medication side-effects. I realized that I hate those people who left behind their shoe prints on the toilet seats. I know that they could be very conscious about cleanliness and hygiene of their precious bums but leaving behind a dirtied seat is NOT clean nor hygienic! It's inconsiderate and creating a messy environment for the next user. Is not that they cannot choose to squat over the toilet bowl but they should at the very least clean up after themselves.

What do you think should be done to these people? Public education are not working. Are we going to resort to a fine that Singapore are so infamous for?

I feel that being civil conscious is the way to go as each and everyone of us has a role to play that we live in the most conducive environment.

What are your pet peeves? I would like to hear from you. BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. BlogBooster is a multi-service blog editor for iPhone, Android, WebOs and your desktop

This is overwhelming

I remember when I was little, Barbie doll at a time was a constant companion. I used to envy the huge bevy of cool friends that she used to hang out with. The cool things that she had and my, didn't she just look gorgeous.

Not so when we blew her up to real life proportion, she looks scary. Real scary!

At 5’9″, with a 39″ bust, 18″ waist, 33″ hips, and a size 3 shoe, this is what Barbie would look like as an actual person. With a small pin-sized head and a pair of ginormous boobs, she looks like she would topple anytime. Lol.

Galia Slayen is the creator of this life-size Barbie. She had made this doll as part of the National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) at her high school.  You may get the full story via this link at Huffington Post.

Recipe - Ginger Pork

I've got no picture for this post as I had gobbled up the food before remembering to take a photo of the dish. This dish is simple yet filled with flavour. It goes well with either rice or porridge.

Ginger Pork
Adapted from Your Japanese Kitchen 2 by Harumi Kurihara

In Harumi's recipe, the meat is grilled but I stir-fried instead with the marinate making it quite a 'saucy' dish. The sauce is wonder to be drizzled over freshly steamed rice. Harumi also suggested for the shredded cabbage to be submerged in water with ice for the cabbage to be extra crisp. Indeed, the cabbage has the extra crunch when one bites into it. A great contrast to the tender meat.

Ingredients (serves 4)
400 g sliced pork shoulder loin (I used tenderloin instead)
1-2 tbsp grated ginger# (I minced the ginger finely due to lack of a grater)
6 tbsp soy sauce
4 tbsp mirin
vegetable oil (I used canola) - for frying
shredded cabbage - to serve (at the side or base)
shredded shiso* or basil - to serve (I omitted this as I could not find them in the grocer)

Method
  1. Soak the cabbage in iced water to make it crisp. Drain and mix with the shiso. Make sure that all water is removed from the cabbage, a salad spinner will do a great job in this instance. Chill in the refrigerator as you prepare the meat.
  2. Combine the soy sauce, mirin, and grated ginger. Marinate the pork in the mixture for a few minutes.
  3. Heat a little oil in a frying pan over high heat. Quickly brown the pork slices. You may use a grill if you have one.
  4. Put the shredded vegetables on a plate. Arrange the pork on top.

#The ginger removed all the 'porky' smell from the pork. It works really well as I am a person who does not eat pork very frequently as I do not like the strong 'porky' smell.

Hope you will enjoy this recipe!
